What Size Christmas Tree Do I Need? A Ceiling Height Guide for Australian Homes

Jack Doyle · Jack Frost Christmas Trees

Too small and it looks lost in the corner. Too tall and the star ends up bent sideways against the ceiling. Choosing the right size real Christmas tree is mostly simple maths, and this guide does it for you.

Below you'll find typical Australian ceiling heights, a feet-to-metres chart (because Christmas trees are still sold in feet), how much room to leave for the stand and topper, and how to check you have the floor space.

Quick answer: what size Christmas tree fits my ceiling?

Allow about 30cm (1ft) between the top of the tree and the ceiling for the stand and a topper. Then use this guide:

Ceiling heightRecommended treeTree height in metres
2.4m (standard)6ftapprox. 1.83m
2.55m to 2.6m7ftapprox. 2.13m
2.7m7ft (8ft with a low or no topper)approx. 2.13m to 2.44m
3.0m8ftapprox. 2.44m
3.3m9ftapprox. 2.74m
3.6m and above10ftapprox. 3.05m

For a standard 2.4m ceiling, a 6ft tree is the best fit. Our most popular size is 7ft.

What is the standard ceiling height in Australia?

Under the National Construction Code, the minimum ceiling height for habitable rooms such as living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms is 2.4m. That's the height you'll find in a large share of Australian homes and apartments.

Many newer homes go higher. Builders commonly offer 2.55m, 2.7m or even 3m ceilings, and 2.7m has become a popular choice in new builds. Older homes vary widely, and some period homes have much higher ceilings.

The only way to know for sure is to measure. Measure from the floor to the ceiling at the exact spot where the tree will stand, because raked ceilings, bulkheads and downlights can change the height across a room.

How do you convert Christmas tree sizes from feet to metres?

Christmas trees in Australia are still sold in feet. Here's the conversion (1ft = 30.48cm):

Tree sizeHeight in metresHeight in centimetres
5ft1.52m152cm
6ft1.83m183cm
7ft2.13m213cm
8ft2.44m244cm
9ft2.74m274cm
10ft3.05m305cm

Keep in mind that real trees are natural. They aren't cut to an exact millimetre, so treat sizes as a guide and leave a little extra room.

How much space do you need above a Christmas tree?

A common rule of thumb is to leave about 30cm (1ft) between the top of the tree and the ceiling. That allowance covers:

  • The stand. A stand lifts the tree off the floor, adding a little height.
  • The topper. A star or angel can add anywhere from a few centimetres to 30cm or more. Measure yours.
  • Breathing room. A tree pressed against the ceiling looks cramped and makes decorating the top awkward.

Simple formula: ceiling height minus 30cm = the tallest tree you should buy. If you have a tall topper, subtract its height too.

Worked example

Your ceiling is 2.4m (240cm). Subtract 30cm and you get 210cm. A 6ft tree (183cm) fits comfortably with room for a topper. A 7ft tree (213cm) is just over the line, so it would only work without a topper and with very little clearance.

How much floor space does a Christmas tree need?

Height is only half the story. Real pines are fuller than many people expect, and bigger trees are wider at the base. Before you choose a size:

  • Measure the floor area where the tree will go, including how far it can spread out from the wall or corner.
  • Leave a walkway. You'll want to get past without brushing the branches every time.
  • Think about doors, drawers and the TV. Make sure the branches won't block anything you use every day.
  • Leave access to the stand. You'll be topping up the water daily, so you need to reach the base.
  • Check the path in. Narrow hallways, stairs and lifts matter for bigger trees, especially in apartments.

In a smaller room or apartment, a slightly shorter tree often looks better than one that fills every centimetre. In a large open-plan space or a room with high ceilings, a 7ft or 8ft tree has real presence.

Where is the best spot in the room for a real tree?

  • Away from heat: keep it clear of heaters, stoves, heating vents and fireplaces.
  • Out of strong direct sun: a sunny window in December dries a tree quickly.
  • Near a power point for lights, so cords don't trail across walkways.
  • On a level floor so the tree stands straight.
